The Smithsonian American Art Museum has put together an incredibly interesting collection of American art from the era of the Civil War. The paintings address the issues of internal war directly, but more metaphorically allude to an eclectic group of meanings, through compelling landscapes and genre paintings. Artists featured are Winslow Homer, Frederic Church, and Hiram Powers among others.
